Sulla copertina del singolo Pictures of you del gruppo The Cure c’è una fotografia in bianco e nero di Mary Poole la moglie di Robert Smith, leader dei The Cure.
La storia di questa fotografia mi è piaciuta particolarmente così la riscrivo anche se penso sia già abbastanza nota.
La canzone Pictures of You fu estratta dall’album Disintegration, del 1989, come quarto singolo. In un’intervista Robert Smith ha raccontato che dopo un incendio che aveva distrutto la sua abitazione, cercando tra ciò che restava della casa trovò il suo portafoglio con all’interno delle fotografie della moglie. Recuperate perciò queste fotografie il cantante dei The Cure decise di usare come copertina del singolo Pictures of you proprio una di quelle immagini.
La foto era già stata utilizzata come copertina del singolo Charlotte Sometimes del 1981, anche se in quella occasione l’immagine aveva subito una pesante elaborazione.
Dovevano essere delle foto molto importanti per Robert Smith per averlo accompagnato per così tanto tempo, per essere state cercate anche tra i resti di un incendio e per aver ispirato la canzone Pictures of you che inizia con queste parole:
I’ve been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they’re real
I’ve been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel
